MONROVIA – Liberia has recorded 446 confirmed cases of COVID—19 as of June 12. The number of cases began going up after President George Weah began the relaxation of the lockdown.
According to the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), 25 new cases were confirmed as of June 12.
Bong County which is central Liberia began recorded cases of confirmed COVID-19 early last week with a current total of three. However, all three confirmed cases were tested positive for the virus after they had died.
At least 11 of the 15 counties now have confirmed cases of COVID-19 with Montserrado County recording the highest number of cases – 394 cases (17 new cases).
Margibi County, one of the closest to Montserrado has also recorded 29 cases, followed by Nimba County with 12, Gbarpolu, 7, Grand Bassa, 9, Bong County 5, Lofa 4, Rivergee 1, Maryland 1 and Bomi 1.
COVID-19 is on the rise in the country at a time when the government and the Roberts International Airport are contemplating putting measures in place and coming up with health protocols for the reopening of the country’s airport by June 21, 2020.
President Weah said given the country’s level of experience with the Coronavirus and its mode of transmission, the strides being made in its containment and in view of developments in other countries, the need for further extension of the constitutional measure is not required.
He said the situation will be assessed going forward. The Liberian Leader has called on health authorities in the country and other related government agencies to continue to enforce the stipulations of the public health laws in order to ensure that there is strict adherence to the protocols against COVID-19.
At the same time, President Weah has mandated the Ministers of Education and Health to promulgate guidelines for the return of 12 graders to class by June to enable them prepare for their WASSCE.
