Monrovia – The outgoing President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), K. Abdullah Kamara (KAK) has promised to play an active role in the media landscape of Liberia during the administration of his successor.
Kamara asserted that leaving the PUL as President does not in any way suggest that he is no more a member and contributor of the organization; but a challenge to get involved in improving the media landscape of the country.
“Leaving the PUL as President, I will still be involved with media development: advocating and making sure that the media landscape is developed and journalists exhibit professional ethics in their reportage,” he said.
Kamara continued: “Over time Journalism has improved in our country, which simply means we need to strengthen our solidarity and work together for the common good of the institution”.
Speaking at FrontPage Africa’s year end celebration held on Friday, December 23, the outgoing PUL Boss asserted that although the Media landscape of the country has made significant progress over the years, there is still room for improvement.
Kamara added that there have been situations where people have been persecuted for their speeches in the country, something he described as gross violation of their constitutional rights.
The PUL President speaking further, noted that Liberia is at a cross road so everybody needs to get involved in the peace building process of the country, noting that “Liberia is the only country we have.”
It can be recalled that KAK and his team were defeated recently by Charles Coffey and team at the PUL’s national convention held in Ganta, Nimba County.
Also speaking, a former secretary general of the PUL, D. Kaihenneh Sengbeh, urged the management and reporters of FPA to continue to serve as watch dogs in the society, adding that Journalists are key players in the growth and development of every society.
Sengbeh said in order to maintain the position of being the best newspaper in the country, reporters of FPA should work together as partners to move the institution forward.
“I urge you to work together to improve the institution to a higher level. Considering that FrontPage Africa is the best newspaper in the country which is undisputable. “
“We urge you to continue your hard work to impact the lives of our people through the dissemination of information” he added.
For his part, FPA’s Acting News Desk Chief, Lennart Dodoo noted that the smooth working relationship among the staff is the hallmark of their success.
He thanked his colleagues and employers for the level of cooperation during the short period he has been in charge of the news room and urged them to continue the cordial working relationship.
The program, held at FrontPage Africa’s office in Sinkor, was graced by media personnel and representatives of both public and private entities.
