Monrovia – Three major opposition political parties in Liberia have agreed to join forces and form a collaboration for the purposes of having a united front in providing alternative solutions to the country’s challenges and keeping the government in check.
At a joint press conference in Monrovia on Monday, the Liberty Party (LP), Alternative National Congress (ANC) and the immediate former ruling Unity Party (UP) disclosed that the purpose of their collaboration is to “hold the CDC-led government accountable to our Constitution and people”.
The three parties collaborated during the 2017 electoral impasse, claiming that the first round of the election was rigged and did not meet any of the criteria to be called a free, fair and transparent election and demanded a re-run of the process.
However, while the ANC refrained from supporting either side going for the runoff, its standard-bearer, Alexander Cummings, indulged his followers to support any party of their choice in the runoff.
The Liberty Party appeared divided during the runoff. It’s standard bearer, Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine, refused to back either side during the run-off, while top executives of the party including the chairman, the vice standard bearer, chief campaign officer, and others pledged their support to the CDC.
The signing of the political collaboration on Monday comes amid concerns over the CDC-led government’s decision to source two separate questionable loans from private international firms and the delay in holding democratic elections to fill the two vacant senatorial seats of Bong and Montserrado Counties.
