Monrovia – The Civil Servants Union of Liberia (CSUL) is calling on the leaders and supporters of the Council of Patriots (COP) to abandon their planned protest for Monday, January 6, 2020. The organization says it applauds and supports the efforts being made by the International Community and the Interreligious Council to mediate between the Government of Liberia and the COP to promote and sustain the peace of the country.
“In this light, we are calling on all civil servants across the country to report to work and go about their normal duties on Monday, January 6, 2020. We must all remain peaceful and committed to protecting the peace of our country.”
The Civil Servants Union of Liberia (CSUL)
As a Union, we understand the enormous challenges facing the country and the rights of the people to express themselves freely. However, these challenges must be addressed in a way that protects the peace and security of the country.
We believe peaceful assembly of citizens or protest are essential elements of a democratic society. Notwithstanding, exercising those rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, must be done in the way that respects the rights of other citizens and preserve the peace, security and stability of the country.
The CSUL welcomes the Government’s commitment to dialoguing with its people as a way of problem solving in the country, a commitment the Government demonstrated during the recent go-slow action called by the CSUL regarding civil servants salaries and other issues. As a result of the high-level dialogue between the Government and the CSUL, most issues identified have been addressed by the Government, while the outstanding issues are being addressed along with the Union.
It is within this same spirit of dialogue, we encourage the COP to engage with the Government to address their concerns.
In this light, we are calling on all civil servants across the country to report to work and go about their normal duties on Monday, January 6, 2020. We must all remain peaceful and committed to protecting the peace of our country.
