High School Debate Team Seeks Financial Aid For South African Trip


Monrovia – The Liberian delegation to partake in Orate Africa Championship Leg – I prestigious international High School Debate competition has alarmed budgetary constraints would likely prevent them from partaking in the debate if nobody comes to their aid.

“Liberia delegation is expected to leave for South Africa this Thursday, by 5 am, but as it stands, we are faced with budgetary constraints set at US$9,250 to facilitate air-tickets of the remaining Nine (9) of the 14-man delegation,” said Executive Director Youth for Change Alex Devine.

The championship is organized by an acclaimed South African-base institution called Orate Africa Trust.

This competition involves the following categories: Debate, Poetry, Spelling Bee, and Public speaking, and Liberia is eligible to participate in all.

Devine said, this year, which is the 2nd edition, will be hosted by Ranfontein High School, Gauteng Province, South Africa from the 7th to the 16th of December
2017. “And will involve 14 African counties.”

“Having consistently followed the “Liberia National High School Debate” live stream on our institution’s Facebook page” Youth for Change Inc., Organizer of this competition, they (Orate Africa Trust) respectfully extended an invitation to Liberia through Youth for Change, Inc. to participate in this year edition,” Devine added.

Devine said upon receiving this invitation, a competitive vetting process was conducted, nine students’ constituting three teams were eligible to represent Liberia at this championship.

“As per the debate structure, each team must have an adjudicator thus putting the number to three adjudicators, and two organizers. The total number of delegation for this trip is 14 persons.”

According to Devine, the his organization has been able to secure passports, visas, yellow fever cards, delegation registration fees and uninforms and African costumes, Liberian flag for 14 persons and air-tickets for five persons.

He called on all well meaning Liberians to rally around the team in lifting the Liberia flag high.

“To All well-meaning Liberians, Liberia delegation faith is now tied to raising US$9,250.00 only on December 6, 2017 if they will represent the mother Land at this prestigious international championship,” he said.
