Monrovia – A commitment to build a new teaching hospital for Liberia has been made by doctors of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
At its 111th Anniversary Convention held at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland, the group of Alpha doctors committed to building the teaching hospital in Liberia and providing specialized training and mentorship to Liberian doctors.
This pronouncement was made on Friday, July 15, 2017 during a meeting between the Liberian delegation led by T. Nelson Williams, II, Liberia’s Chapter President and a group of Alpha doctors headed by Dr. William E. Bennett, Former Senior Science Advisor to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
During the forum, the Alpha brothers agreed that this worthwhile project should be implemented in Liberia and will be a priority.
Other members of the Liberian delegation were Prince Kieh (Financial Secretary), Joe Sumo (International Affairs Committee) and Captain Stephen Mulbah (Former Sergeant-at-Arms). Another member of the team of doctors is Dr. Ernest C. Levister, Jr. (Internal Medicine, Cardiopulmonary & Industrial Toxicology).
Based on the commitment of the U.S. Alpha Doctors, a technical and medical team is to visit Liberia in early 2018 to conduct the initial feasibility and site investigation.
This is yet another bold manifestation of Alpha Phi Alpha in making healthcare a priority, Alpha Phi Alpha Liberia continues to support healthcare initiatives in Liberia through strong local and international partnerships.
In 2015, they distributed medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to twenty-seven medical facilities in Liberia valued at $500,000.00 with support from two Alpha Organizations.
In 2014, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority built an Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) at the former Unity Conference Center site to assist the government during the Ebola crisis.
In February, 2013 Seven (7) Alpha US Medical Doctors, were in Liberia on a humanitarian mission by providing free surgeries and other medical services to Liberians.
Led by Bro. Dr. Rahn Kennedy Baily, Past President of the National Medical Association (NMA) of the United States, the team of Alpha doctors provided surgeries at J.F.K. Hospital, Redemption Hospital, Jackson F. Doe, Sr. Memorial Hospital, ELWA and other medical facilities in and out of the capital.
Alpha Phi Alpha (ΑΦΑ) develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for their communities.
