Monrovia – Hundreds of students from about 10 schools including the disabled community have benefited from the donation of food and assorted items provided by junior officials of government.
The gesture is intended to help the government in reaching out to underprivileged students and disabled as means of creating a space for beneficiaries to feel part of the pro-poor agenda, the group said.
The donors are mainly junior ministers and directors who are members of the Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC) congregating under the banner ‘Like Minded Party Faithfuls’.
The group made the gesture at the weekend, distributing over 70 cartoons containing eight dozen of copybooks each.
Giving the overview of the project, Madam Josephine Davies said the initiative is a landmark project of the newly formed organization, which she added, has a purpose of redefining their roles as they struggle to redeem Liberians from the shackles of poverty.
According to her, about three months ago, the steering committee of the organization constituted a project committee with a mandate to identify a people-centered project that would bring about a meaningful impact on the lives of the struggling masses.
Madam Davies further noted that members of the committee dedicated their respective time, energy, and resources in ensuring that the distribution of the note books is possible.
“As a committee, we met and discussed on the different variety of pressing needs that would leave a lasting impact on the lives of the ordinary masses. At first, we proposed the payment of tuition fees of about five hundred students ranging from elementary to junior high sections within public schools across Montserrado County,” she said.
Speaking to cross section of students over the weekend, Davis, who is also the Inspector General of Commerce also noted that with the wave of challenges parents are facing, the group has decided to buttress the parents by distributing copybooks and pens to an initial five hundred students.
“Based on the availability of additional cartons of copybooks donated, we saw the need to increase the size to 1,000 beneficiaries,” Madam Davies added.
The distribution committee disclosed that each of the 1,000 students will receive half a dozen of copybooks.
Meanwhile, the group disclosed that the project will also cover members of the disabled community that include the blinds and the physically challenged.
Schools that have become beneficiaries from the donation exercise include the C.W Brumskine Elementary School, E. Jonathan Goodrich Sr./High School, Matadi Community School, A-Glen Elementary School, Gray D. Allison Sr./High School and M.V Massaquoi Elementary School.
Others schools are Buzzy Quarter Elementary School, Monrovia Demonstration Elementary School and the Islamic Girls School.
