Suakoko, Bong County – The United Suakoko Citizens in America on Friday formally handed hospital equipment worth over US$ 5,000 dollars to Phebe Hospital in Suakoko, Bong County.
A member of the association, Ambassador Jeremiah Sulunteh, said the gesture was part of the group’s contribution toward improving the wellbeing of their compatriots in Bong County.
Amb Sulunteh, who has announced his intention to contest the senate seat in Bong County in 2020, said it was their own way of giving back to the county because government alone could not meet the yearnings and needs of the citizenry alone.
Amb Sulunteh said: ‘This is a practical demonstration of patriotic and humanitarian spirit, which prevails in the United State of America and made it one of the greatest nations in the world.
‘We have learnt that government alone cannot meet the needs of the citizens and in emulating the spirit of giving back, Suakoko citizens resident in the United States of America resolved recently to identify with Phebe Hospital that is located in our district.
Amb Sulunteh said the organization had made similar donations, including quality education materials to some schools in Suakoko District.
Amb Sulunteh said the group was poised to partner with well-meaning individuals and groups not only in Suakoko District but the entire Bong County toward making true its objectives of supporting the Liberian government in making life more meaningful for the citizenry.
Sulunteh, former Liberian Ambassador to the United States of America during the regime of former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, described members of the group as ‘ambassadors without borders’.
He said it cost the group more than US$ 2,000 to ship the equipment to Liberia and thanked members of the organization for their personal and collective sacrifices.
Making remarks, the medical director of Phebe Hospital, Dr. Jefferson Sibley, thanked the group for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of ‘uncommon patriotism’ to Suakoko District and Bong County.
‘May I encourage you not to rest on your oars but continue with these achievements for the benefit of our dear district and county,’ Dr Sibley said.
